PLANNING YOUR JOURNEY

The best time to visit Tanzania for safari

Tanzania rewards travellers in every season. The right month depends on what you most want to see.

June – October

The dry season

Thinner vegetation and wildlife gathering near water make this the classic time for game viewing across the Serengeti, Tarangire, Ruaha and Katavi. July to October is when the migration herds are usually in the northern Serengeti, where river crossings may occur. Popular camps book early.

January – March

Calving season

The herds typically graze the short-grass plains around Ndutu and the southern Serengeti, where many calves are born. It is a beautiful, quieter time to travel, and also a good window for climbing Kilimanjaro and for Zanzibar.

The Ndutu calving journey

April – May

The long rains

The green season brings lush landscapes, fewer vehicles and lower demand. Some remote camps close during these months, and certain roads and airstrips can be affected by rain, so we plan carefully around what is open.

November – December

The short rains

Brief afternoon showers refresh the plains and the herds begin moving south again. Birdlife is excellent and the land turns green — a rewarding time to combine safari with a Zanzibar beach stay.

Weather patterns vary year to year.

Wildlife movements follow the rains, not the calendar, so no month guarantees a particular sighting. Tell us your dates and wishes and we will match you to the right parks, camps and season.
